How’s your engagement looking?
With record numbers on TikTok, being successful on the platform is a double-edged sword – more people are watching, but there’s also tonnes of new content being uploaded every minute of every day. If you’re worried about numbers and want to know how to get more engagement on TikTok, you’ve come to the right place! Here are our top 3 tips to get you going:
1. Remember the 3 second rule
In our piece on hacking the TikTok algorithm, we introduced the idea of the 3 second rule. This rule says that those first 3 seconds are vital! Your video is more likely to be boosted on the ‘For You’ page if there is good watch time and completion rates on the content. So, if users are only watching for a few seconds, and not the whole way through, it’s a problem! You’ve got to really capture the attention of viewers in those precious first 3 seconds.
Another thing to note is the ‘batch theory’, which says that TikTok shows your posts to a small batch of users at a time, to test the ratio of likes-to-views or engagement-to-views, which then determines whether a larger batch of users see the video. This makes completion rates and watch time even more important – so get people invested quickly! Every second counts.
Content quality is everything, which is why if you’re wondering how to get more engagement on TikTok, it all starts with how good your ideas are. Say no to repurposing content intended for other platforms! This doesn’t make the most of TikTok native sounds, trends, and memes. Create good quality video – no blurry shots! Ensure your content engages with the things that matter for TikTok itself, as TikTok’s algorithm will flag low quality content that doesn’t perform.
Quality content also has to be consistent, as this helps your account gain authority, boosting the way the algorithm shares your videos. It’s not enough to throw out one great video, without any follow up. Be aware that it’s also not a good idea to remove content that hasn’t done as well as you’d hope for – keep on experimenting, trying new things, and brainstorming creative takes using TikTok features, instead.
3. Drive external traffic to your profile and videos
If you’re struggling to get numbers, it’s time to use the other tools in your kit! Create links directly to your TikTok profile or specific videos from different channels – if you’re not sure how to get more engagement on TikTok but already have a solid following elsewhere, it’s a good idea to send that traffic to TikTok! You could also use QR codes or promote videos in your newsletter, linking to your videos.
But don’t forget: This doesn’t mean the content that viewers discover on your TikTok profile is the same as your other platforms.
Encourage viewers to share your TikTok links themselves, too. Whenever your video is shared on another platform, your account is rewarded with more engagement.
